Collector's Edition Frofenia Drawings 1983-1990
Leszek Knaflewski

300 EUR English version

The collector’s edition of “FROFENIA” has been bound in hardcover, with the author’s handmade illustration on each copy. The book comes in an elegant, custom-made box bound in dark-grey cloth, accompanied by a sketchbook with reproductions of fashion designs from 1984. The collector’s edition is limited to 30 signed copies in the English-language version only.

Leszek Knaflewski’s “FROFENIA” is a unique collection of never previously published drawings from the years 1983-1990, when the multimedia visual artist was active in the Koło Klipsa group. From among the several hundred works, we have selected 77 most representative for the period.

‘Frofenia’, a word coined by Leszek ‘Knaf’ Knaflewski, refers us to the sphere of visual language where everything is possible: hybrid creatures inhabiting fictional worlds, unreal situations, and free expression. At the same time, the drawings are marked by utmost discipline, both formal and symbolic.

Honza Zamojski
The choice of paper and the cover – brown recycled cardboard – hearken back to the sketchbooks used by Knaflewski in the 1980s. Those days, the austerity of the material was necessitated by harsh economic conditions, today it is the author’s deliberate choice.

The book has been printed on uncoated Munken Print White paper in two grammages: drawings on 150 g/m2 and text on 100 g/m2. The paper’s shade – toned-down white – allows for the faithful reproduction of images while retaining the haptic qualities of standard ‘drawing pad paper’.

Presented to the public for the first time, Leszek Knaflewski’s drawings from the years 1983-1990 constitute a unique discovery. Revealing the private sphere, revealing emotions, feelings and images that have retained the energy and power of metaphor, they allow us to study both the author’s visual choices and the complex artistic processes that shaped the Polish art of the era.

Leszek Knaflewski

Born in 1960, Leszek Knaflewski is an audiovisual artist. His work lies at the borders of visual art and music. He is well-known for his audio-performative activities, by means of which he undertakes a discussion with contemporary culture. The visual elegance of his works is juxtaposed with their critical potential and profound social analysis. With Knaflewski, sound and rhythm constitute an impulse to speak of reality and human existence, the fragmentation of which can be curbed thanks to a fitting tempo. At times, these vibrations build an unseen system of meanings in his works.

Leszek Knaflewski is the founder and director of the Audiosphere Studio at the Poznań University of Arts’ Faculty of Multimedia Communication. His works can be found in the collections of a number of institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the National Museum in Poznań, the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, the Royal Museum of Mariemont in Morlanwelz, Belgium, the Grażyna Kulczyk Collection in Poznań and the Wyspa (Island) Institute of Art in Gdańsk.
